Willa Kim Scholarship & Exhibition; News from Perdue and USITT

The Theatre Communications Group (TCG) has announced the recipients of 2023 The Willa Kim Costume Design Scholarship, honoring costume designer Willa Kim’s legacy and her life’s work as a pioneer, legend, and inspiration for many of today’s theater artists. Kim’s iconic work in ballet, theater, opera, and television is also the subject of a career spanning retrospective at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts as noted in this month’s theater news, along with a new online course in Structures for the Stage from Purdue University. We also look at USITT’s Gateway Program and USITT’s 2023 Joel E. Rubin Founders Award honoree, Elynmarie Kazle.

More Than 100 ADJ Fixtures Create Impressive Atmosphere at ‘Vroeger Was Alles Beter 2023’

A significant quantity of ADJ Focus Profile, Vizi Beam 12RX, and Focus Flex automated luminaires were used to create an impressive atmosphere last month for a huge hardstyle dance event held at the Autotron exhibition center close to ‘s-Hertogenbosch in The Netherlands. Vroeger Was Alles Beter (which translates to ‘Everything Used To Be Better’) focuses on classic hard dance music and this special edition dubbed ‘The Man With The Golden Classics’ was headlined by one of the scene’s most prolific artists, Headhunterz. The sold-out event, which attracted a crowd of 8000, ran all day from 12:30pm through to 12:00am. Elynmarie Kazle Honored with the USITT Joel E. Rubin Founders Award at USITT23

At the USITT 23 Conference in St. Louis, USITT honored Elynmarie Kazle with The Joel E. Rubin Founder’s Award, which is presented to a USITT member in recognition of outstanding and continued service to the Institute. This award was named in honor of Dr. Joel E. Rubin, co-founder and the second president of the Institute. In Memoriam: Bob Roach, Lighting Industry Veteran, 67

Bob Roach

Robert David Roach, 67 of Longwood, FL, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on March 7, 2023. Bob had recently been diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) and received a successful bone marrow transplant from his son, Mike. Sadly, in his weakened state he contracted pneumonia and was not able to rebound from it. He was born in Johnson City, TN on March 25, 1955 to John and Josephine Roach who preceded him in death.
