2023 Tony Award Winners

Some beautiful design work was nominated for the 76th Annual TONY Awards this year and selecting winners was surely a difficult task. However, winners were indeed announced at the celebration of Broadway’s incredible season of work. Here is the list of the Tony Award worthy designs for 2023 with the winners highlighted.

The Howell Binkley Fellowship Program announced their third Fellow for 2023, Amara McNeil; and a 2023 Tony Honors for Excellence in the Theatre will be presented to Production Supervisor and Production Stage Manager Lisa Dawn Cave. We also look at the Tony design nominations and present the news of appointments and promotions at the Washington National Opera (WNO).

The Design Winners of the 67th Annual Drama Desk Awards

On May 31, 2023 the winners for the 67th Annual Drama Desk Awards were announced. In keeping with the Drama Desk‘s mission, the nominators considered shows that opened on Broadway, Off-Broadway, and Off-Off Broadway during the 2022-2023 season for this year’s awards. Among the winners are Life of Pi designers: Tim Hatley for Lighting and Andrzej Goulding for Projection and Video. Vari-Lite VL2600 Fixtures Unleash Intense Colors for ‘Sweeney Todd’

Austin Opera’s world-class Long Center presented a production of the classic Sweeney Todd this spring, with a series of lighting states created by LD James Sale using Vari-Lite VL2600 Wash luminaires from Signify. “I wanted to put Sweeney Todd in the audience’s faces which to me meant he needed to be bright,” says Sale, who has designed the lighting for shows at the innovative Long Center for more than a decade. “The VL2600s were very bright, which was a big plus. The Callboard: The 2022 TDF/Irene Sharaff Awardees

TDF, the not-for-profit service organization for the performing arts, proudly announced recently the 2022 TDF/Irene Sharaff Awardees: Fred Voelpel, Eugene Lee, Dede Ayite, Michael Curry, and Caroline F. Siedle.

2022 TDF/Irene Sharaff Awardees Announced

TDF, the not-for-profit service organization for the performing arts, is proud to announce that celebrated costume designer Fred Voelpel and legendary scenic designer Eugene Lee are among the 2022 TDF/Irene Sharaff Award recipients. Although Voelpel passed away in June, he will be honored posthumously with the TDF/Irene Sharaff Lifetime Achievement Award for costume design while Lee will receive The Robert L. B. Tobin Award for Sustained Excellence in Theatrical Design. Additionally, costume designer Dede Ayite will receive the TDF/Kitty Leech Young Master Award and visual artist Michael Curry will receive the TDF/Irene Sharaff Artisan Award.

The awards ceremony will be presented through the TDF Costume Collection on Friday, October 7 at 6:30 p.m. at The Edison Ballroom.
