USITT: Collier Robert Woods, Jr. Scholarship Now Accepting Applications Through June 22

USITT is now accepting applications for the Collier Robert Woods, Jr. Scholarship 2023. The application portal is now open and will be accepted through June 22, 2023. Founded in 2021, the Collier Robert Woods, Jr. Scholarship supports Black and African American students with interests in lighting design and/or theatre production, technology, and associated theatrical fields. Applicants are considered based on strength of application and potential as supported in a letter of recommendation. The scholarship is renewable and is paid directly to the bursar at your institution.

Willa Kim Scholarship & Exhibition; News from Perdue and USITT

The Theatre Communications Group (TCG) has announced the recipients of 2023 The Willa Kim Costume Design Scholarship, honoring costume designer Willa Kim’s legacy and her life’s work as a pioneer, legend, and inspiration for many of today’s theater artists. Kim’s iconic work in ballet, theater, opera, and television is also the subject of a career spanning retrospective at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts as noted in this month’s theater news, along with a new online course in Structures for the Stage from Purdue University. We also look at USITT’s Gateway Program and USITT’s 2023 Joel E. Rubin Founders Award honoree, Elynmarie Kazle.

Designer James L. Moody died this year at the age of 80. A pioneering lighting designer for concerts, television, and theater as well as a professor, lecturer, author, and mentor, Moody had an amazing and varied career that influenced many throughout the live entertainment industry.

Remembering Nook: Family, Friends, and Colleagues Gather for a Celebration of Life in Minneapolis

The crowd gathered to Celebrate the Life of Richard “Nook” Schoenfeld with LD & MC John Featherstone leading the remembrances. Musicians Tom Liebermann on guitar, and Tim O’Keefe on percussion and harmonica added some live music to the evening.

TCG Announces the 2023 Recipients of Willa Kim Costume Design Scholarship

Theatre Communications Group (TCG), the national organization for theatre, is pleased to announce Kaʻiukapu BakerClaudia Brownlee, and Lia Wallfish as the recipients of The Willa Kim Costume Design Scholarship 2023. Administered by TCG with support from The Estate of Willa Kim, the Scholarship provides exceptionally talented costume designers who are enrolled in a university or professional training program with the opportunity to supplement their fine arts training in hand-drawing and painting. The Scholarship honors costume designer Willa Kim’s legacy and her life’s work as a pioneer, legend, and inspiration for many of today’s theatre artists. In Memoriam: James Moody, Designer, Author, Teacher, Mentor, 80

Designer James L. Moody died on Monday, February 20, 2023, at the age of 80. Lighting Designer for theater, concerts, and television as well as professor, lecturer, author, and mentor, Moody had an amazing and varied career.

We send our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues on his passing. Launched in September 2020 by Cody Renard Richard in partnership with Broadway Advocacy Coalition, this year’s Scholarship includes a new initiative supported by The Theater Leadership Project.
