ULTRA Europe made its triumphant return to Park Mladeži in Split, Croatia from July 8 –10, 2022, welcoming more than 160,000 attendees from 141 countries for the festival’s eighth edition. Europe’s premier destination music festival featured four stages, with the Main Stage impressing attendees as a marvelous giant measuring 20m high and 80m long, with more than 500 sq. m. of LED screens and flanked by world-class pyrotechnics.

Phish’s North American summer tour united the collaborative lighting team of Chris Kuroda, longtime lighting designer for Phish, and associate designer Andrew “Gif” Giffin, who have created a dynamic and eye-catching design with the help of 72 Robe Tetra2 moving LED bars and 60 Robe Spiiders. The opening ceremony of the 20th Games Of Jiangsu Province was held on the evening of Aug. 28 in Taizhou Sports Park in China. The theme for this cultural and sports ceremony was “Phoenix brings auspiciousness to the water city, and the river and sea are peaceful.” New technologies featured during the opening ceremony included laser projection, mobile screens, human/screen interaction, 3D without specialty glasses and augmented reality. In March, an array of double-sided LED displays were installed on light poles along the Avenue of Stars in Beijing, China. These displays, made by INFiLED, have a pixel pitch of only 3.91mm, adding vibrancy and vitality to the whole avenue. The Avenue of Stars is located in the Starlight Film and Television Park, a national TV program production base in Beijing. To optimize the park’s layout and convey its visions, INFiLED was brought in to provide an LED display solution. On Coldplay’s Music of the Spheres tour, there are powerful video and camera systems that provide the video team the ability to take in any signal—in any flavor—and play it back where, and whenever needed on the many playback surfaces of Production Designer Misty Buckley’s massive set. Those playback surfaces include two 14m (45.93’) circular I-Mag screens—which are used constantly throughout the show; a large arched video wall—known as the Moonrise—that is approximately 44m (144.35’) wide by 6m (19.68’) at the tallest; and four large inflatable LED video spheres suspended high above the Moonrise. The I-Mag and Moonrise LED screens are made from ROE Visual Carbon Series CB8 8mm LED panels and the LED spheres are covered in PRG LED Strip with a nominal 25mm pixel pitch. During the construction of fine pixel pitch LED screens, there is a common occurrence of dark or bright lines appearing between adjacent modules. These lines are caused by the dislocation of panels during installation and can have a significant impact on the overall visual experience. Manual calibration and professional camera calibration are the two methods that are typically used for calibration; however, both of these approaches have limitations. Professional camera calibration equipment is expensive and awkward to carry; and the systems are often quite complex, and it is challenging for staff to operate them.
