This summer, some seven decades after Brutalism first shook things up in the design world, highly regarded Lighting and Production Designer Bryan Barancik has channeled its visceral power to create a gripping, deeply moving show for Lenny Kravitz on the four-time Grammy winner’s 27-city European tour, which began June 23 in Hamburg at Sporthalle.
Friday, June 21 marked a momentous day for fans of extreme metal music. On that evening Dimitri Minakakis returned to join The Dillinger Escape Plan for the first of three shows at the Brooklyn Paramount Theatre, held to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the band’s seminal ‘Calculating Infinity’ album. Also making a return, though it was after a far shorter hiatus, was Victor Zeiser, Owner of Squeek Lights.
Napoleon called it “the drawing room of Europe,” but Piazza San Marco is much more than that. For centuries, this 12,128 m2 trapezoidal space bordering the Bay of San Marco has been an enchanted spot of beauty and inspiration that has worked its magic on poets, artists, dreamers, and, of course, millions of tourists, from around the world.
It was “a perfect show on a perfect night” one local newspaper critic wrote of Hootie & the Blowfish’s appearance at Michigan’s Pine Knob, speaking for the 14,000 fans who packed the amphitheater earlier this summer. This sentiment is being echoed (weather permitting) at every other stop on the iconic alt rockers’ 43-city ‘Summer Camp With Trucks’ tour.
Close collaboration between a lighting and video team is always essential. The fine points of this relationship take on an extra level of urgency when the sun starts setting on an outdoor broadcast production. This point was driven home to multi-Prime Time Emmy Award winning Lighting Designer/Director Jon Kusner on June 6, when he lit the grand reopening of the iconic Michigan Central Station.
Lighting Designer Daniel Knipper used 24 CHAUVET Professional Ovation Rêve E-3 IP LED ellipsoidals in his transformative design for the six-century-old Strasbourg Cathedral located in Place de la Cathédrale in Strasbourg, France. The full-spectrum color-mixing fixtures, which were supplied by XEOS, were hung on two porticos that flanked the façade. This arrangement allowed Knipper to highlight the architectural details of the façade by creating gobos based on digital photos.
The numbers speak for themselves. Over 5,700 kilometers traveled, 14 cities visited, 500 visitors participating, and 222 very large mouthwatering pizzas ordered. They paint an impressive picture of the 2024 LTT Free Lighting Workshops. As remarkable as they are, however, these figures tell only part of the story. Of more lasting value are the knowledge gained, connections formed, and new horizons explored at this series of dynamic events.
The architectural design of the Insomniac Events Electric Daisy Festival’s bassPOD stage is impressive by any measure. But there is more than size to this stunning structure designed by STUFISH Entertainment Architects. With its shapes and forms extending in every direction, and at multiple levels, it presents a labyrinth of possibilities. Erik Mahowald, of Bending Lite Productions, was tasked with making it come alive and accenting all its compelling power with light.
Paul Maloof says he’s the kind of person who loves a challenge. He’s also always open to new experiences. Good thing, because he’s getting his share of both with indie icons Say Anything on their 27-city Is A Real Boy 20th Anniversary Tour. Although they’ve recorded nine albums, in addition to appearing in films and on network TV shows over the past two decades, the popular six-member band has never carried their own LD with them on tour.
