2022 TDF/Irene Sharaff Awardees Announced

TDF, the not-for-profit service organization for the performing arts, is proud to announce that celebrated costume designer Fred Voelpel and legendary scenic designer Eugene Lee are among the 2022 TDF/Irene Sharaff Award recipients. Although Voelpel passed away in June, he will be honored posthumously with the TDF/Irene Sharaff Lifetime Achievement Award for costume design while Lee will receive The Robert L. B. Tobin Award for Sustained Excellence in Theatrical Design. Additionally, costume designer Dede Ayite will receive the TDF/Kitty Leech Young Master Award and visual artist Michael Curry will receive the TDF/Irene Sharaff Artisan Award.

The awards ceremony will be presented through the TDF Costume Collection on Friday, October 7 at 6:30 p.m. at The Edison Ballroom. NYC Theater District Hotel Civilian Celebrates Theater Design

The Theater District’s newest hotel, Civilian, celebrates theater design. Jason Pomeranc is the owner and creator of the Civilian brand along with David Rockwell, who served as the architect, interior designer, and curator of Civilian’s art program, the Olio Collection. ‘A Strange Loop’ Design Team Shares Thoughts on Solutions Provided by PRG

From its world premiere off-Broadway at Playwrights Horizons to a pre-Broadway run at Woolly Mammoth Theatre, the Pulitzer Prize winning musical, A Strange Loop, has now arrived on Broadway, and garnered 11 Tony nominations. PRG worked with the Tony-nominated creative team every step of the journey. Sharing their insights, designers Arnulfo Maldonado, Jen Schriever, and Drew Levy tell us how PRG’s solutions helped realize their designs.

Katz and McLane Talk Design for MJ The Musical with Support from PRG

The design for MJ: The Musical, which opened on Broadway at the Neil Simon Theatre on Feb. 3, was brought to life by scenic designer Derek McLane and lighting designer Natasha Katz with projection design by Peter Nigrini. Both Katz and McLane worked with PRG who provided the scenic, lighting, and automation for the highly anticipated production. Here Katz and McLane discuss their design solutions for the musical, which centers around the making of Michael Jackson’s 1992 Dangerous World Tour.

Black Theatre United Presents the Broadway Marketing Internship Program

A New Initiative for Black Undergraduate Students in Partnership with CUNY

Black Theatre United (BTU), a non-profit organization that helps protect Black people, Black talent, and Black lives in theatre, announces the launch of the Broadway Marketing Internship Program, a summer-long initiative that provides 8 paid internships for undergraduate education students. The pilot program is a first-of-its-kind collaboration between Black Theatre United, CUNY, and four of New York’s top live entertainment advertising and marketing agencies: Serino Coyne, AKA, RPM and Situation Interactive. With a strong focus on and commitment to increasing access for Black, Indigenous, and students of color who have an interest in this arena, yet open to all, this program will provide a learning space to develop a deeper understanding of how the industry operates by working with the various companies and organizations that keep Broadway moving. Two students will be placed with each of the four participating agencies for the eight-week paid program, which runs June 27 – August 19, 2022. The Shubert Organization Announces the Naming of the James Earl Jones Theatre

Video Interview | LD Jeff Croiter on Lighting Freestyle Love Supreme for Broadway Run & US Tour with 4Wall

 

After almost a year and a half of no Broadway shows, the doors finally opened in October 2021. The reopening of the improvisational hip-hop comedy musical group Freestyle Love Supreme, started by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Anthony Veneziale in 2004, presented an opportunity for Tony-Award-winning Lighting Designer Jeff Croiter to upgrade his rig with gear from 4Wall Entertainment.
