Pukkelpop 2013 Featured 3D Overhead Video Wall, ArKaos Control

BRUSSELS, BE — Pukkelpop 2013, which drew 60,000 with headliners including Eminem, The Prodigy and Nine Inch Nails, featured an opening night party in the 30,000 capacity Boiler Room. The main visual attractions was a 3D overhead video wall with pixel mapped content driven by an ArKaos Stage server. The ceiling effects were the idea of Belgian design company, Arf & Yes, brought to life by their lighting designers, Philippe Vanderheeren and Ignace D’haese using 3-dimensional video animation.

BOSTON — Boston Ballet presented its free Night of Stars performance on Boston Common Sept. 21. The event, which kicked off the company’s 50th season and drew an audience of more than 50,000, was supported by a theatrical lighting package from Advanced Lighting & Production Services (ALPS). The event featured the largest stage ever built on Boston Common, as well as a full live orchestra.

BROOKLYN, NY — For the much-discussed and tweeted-about 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, held at Barclays Center here Aug. 25, the lighting rig was hardly at the center of attention, but was nevertheless an integral part of the show. LD Tom Kenny’s rig included Harman’s Martin lighting fixtures, supplied by VER.

DERRY-LONDONDERRY, Northern Ireland — Having seen the benefits to Liverpool after it was designated a European City of Culture by the European Union in 2008, the United Kingdom launched a similar program for cities in the U.K. The first city designated for the one-year honor is the Northern Ireland city known as both Derry and Londonderry. To support the celebrations of that designation, for the year 2013, Manchester, U.K.-based dbn Lighting provided Clay Paky fixtures.

Mountain Productions’ Largest Scaffold Structure Used for EDC Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS — Mountain Productions, Inc. announced the largest scaffold structure in its history at this year’s Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC) in Las Vegas, which was held at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway here from June 21-23. The main stage structure was constructed using over 670,000 pounds of scaffolding and structures and stood 85 feet tall. With an overall width of 480 feet (180 feet wider than a football field), all of the scaffolding used for the main stage would span over 50 miles if laid end to end.

LAS VEGAS — The 2013 Electric Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas, produced by Insomniac Events, drew 90,000 per day for their 3-day visual and audio music festival June 21-23, 2013.  Visions Lighting was there to build and produce the Bass Pod Stage, one of several dynamic production and performance areas featuring the world’s top DJs in the EDM arena.

George Travis to Receive 2013 Parnelli Lifetime Achievement Honor

LAS VEGAS — The Parnelli Board of Advisors has announced that George Travis, longtime production/tour manager for Bruce Springsteen, will receive the live event industry’s highest honor, the Parnelli Lifetime Achievement Award, at the annual gala ceremony in Las Vegas this November. Travis has also worked with Rod Stewart, Kiss, Boston, Elton John, Madonna, Shania Twain and Ringo Starr, among others.

USITT’s 2013 Conference & Stage Expo was One for the Books

The United States Institute for Theatre Technology (USITT) reported a banner year for its four-day Annual Conference & Stage Expo. Held March 20-23, 2013 at Milwaukee, Wisconsin’s Delta Center, the event attracted more people and products than any other in the conference’s 53-year history.
