Ronnie James Dio ‘Hologram’ Rocks Awards Show, Tour Featuring Virtual Frontman Now Being Planned

LOS ANGELES — No firm tour dates have been set, but Eyellusion, the company working with Wendy Rio, the widow of rocker Ronnie James Dio, who died in 2010, is now planning what might be the first live rock show built around a “virtual” performance by a deceased frontman.

The act, called Dio Disciples, already performed the song, “We Rock,” at the 28th Annual Pollstar Awards show in LA’s Novo (formerly Club Nokia) venue on Feb. 2, building on a debut appearance at the Wacken Open Air festival in Germany last summer.

Although the hologram likeness of Ronnie James Dio would be a focal point for the show, the plan calls for the 3D projection to appear on just some of the songs, with Dio’s former bandmates and guest artists paying live tribute to the late performer’s music for the balance of the concert program.

The Feb. 2 Pollstar Awards show capped the 2017 Pollstar Live conference, which took place in Los Angeles from Jan. 31-Feb. 2. On Feb. 1, Eyellusion CEO Jeff Pezzuti teamed up with Wendy Dio and others for a panel discussion on the future of holograms in the concert touring business as part of the event’s conference program.
