LAS VEGAS – The design team for Roger Waters' The Wall Live tour meticulously replicated the touring set used by Pink Floyd in 1980. But the 30+-year-old set design gets a significant visual update from an arsenal of 21st century projection and lighting gear.
The gear list includes 15 Barco FLM HD20 projectors, five FLM R22+ projectors, five Encore presentation systems, and from Barco's High End Systems, 32 Cyberlight 2.0 units and a Road Hog Full Boar console.
Fabricating the replicated set each night, brick-by-brick in sync with the video projection may be labor-intensive, but it's an important part of the show experience. Barco's integrated lighting and video work together to support the concepts in each song, with bending brinks and wriggling worms included in the multi-dimensional animation effects.
To create the visual effect of building the wall brick-by-brick, fifteen FLM HD20 projectors are arranged in five stacks of three, driven by the Encore presentation system. The Encore keys a mask signal from a media server to reveal the video on the bricks as they are added to the wall. An additional five R22+ projectors cover a circular screen for another layer of imagery. A High End Systems Full Boar console ties it all together, providing live cues as well as programmed functions.
"We can always count on Barco for a highly stable, reliable platform and consistent image quality – an absolute must for a high-profile tour with this much complexity," said Phil Mercer, managing director of XL Video. "Barco's FLMs offer the best size/weight/brightness ratio ideal for touring, and are also economical: Barco products are able to accommodate our huge lensing requirements – up to 20 in Europe venues – eliminating the need for us to purchase thousands of dollars in additional lenses."
"The Roger Waters tour is the perfect venue for harnessing the unique synergies of our video and lighting products," said Chris Colpaert, strategic marketing director ProAV for Barco. "Pure, brilliant imagery, dramatic and surprising lighting displays, dynamic scenery builds – it's what Barco is all about: empowering the world's most iconic performers to take their art to unprecedented levels of immersive entertainment."
Barco's FLM HD20 is a three-chip DLP, 20,000 lumens HD projector is designed to allow for sharp images to be seen even in large, luminous environments. The Encore Presentation System is a modular, scalable system that supports up to 12 independent windows or six windows with seamless transitions, including dissolve, wipe, and other effects. The Cyberlight 2.0 is a 2000w hard edge moving mirror fixture with 30,000 lumens of light output. The Road Hog Full Boar is a lighting controller used to create, manage, edit, and playback lighting cues.
