Trafalgar Square Tree Lit with Wireless Control

LONDON — Outdoor lighting installations in London’s parks need to deal with anything from inclement weather to large flocks of pigeons. But a wireless system using City Theatrical’s ShoW DMX helped Storm Lighting brave the elements for the annual tree-lighting ceremony at Trafalgar Square, which averted the need to run cables from the control station at the park’s terrace level to the dimmer location situated under the tree. “This is a classic use of wireless DMX — to bridge a physical barrier which otherwise would have taken a long and time-consuming cable run through a public area,” said Martin Chisnall, of City Theatrical London. “SHoW DMX was able to offer a fast, secure and reliable wireless link to replace this cable run. SHoW DMX’s patented frequency hopping technology ensured the system worked flawlessly, even though several other WiFi networks were also present in the square.”

“This is the sixth year that we have been involved with the switching on ceremony,” said Dave Knapp of Storm Lighting. “Time and the weather always seem to be against us on this job.  SHoW DMX certainly made the rig and de-rig a lot quicker than previous years. I was very impressed with this stable, reliable system.”

The tree is a gift from the city of Oslo to the people of London for their assistance during World War II, an annual tradition since 1947. Boris Johnson, the mayor of London, and Jens Stoltenberg, Norway’s prime minister, attended the ceremony.
