BRATISLAVA, Slovak Republic —Slovakia, the latest EU country to accept the Euro as its national currency, staged a live, televised celebration lit by LD Martin Kubánka using Robe moving lights. Branislav Mišík directed the event, staged at the Slovak National Theatre, and Kubánka worked with DoP Vladimír ÄŽurÄÂanský and set designer Daniel Šichman on the event, which was produced for STV1 by Red House. Attending VIPs included Slovakian prime minister Róbert Fico and president Ivan GašparoviÄÂ, José Manuel Barosso, president of the European Commission and Jean-Claud Trichet, president of European Central Bank. They were joined by a host of other European politicians, bankers and security personnel.
The Robe fixtures included 18 ColorSpot 1200E ATs, 10 ColorWash 1200E ATs and 10 Scan 575 XTs, mostly hung overhead on trussing. Four ColorSpots were on the floor, projecting mosaic effects and break-up gobos onto a pair of sliding doors in the center of the set that was used for entrances and exits.
The presenter and interviewing elements of the show required a series of evenly lit looks, Kubánka said. “The color temperature of the Robes was ideal for this,” he said, adding that he was able to push the fixtures to their fullest potential with the effects used during the guest appearance and musical production number sections, including folk dancers and a ballet performance. These were accompanied by a 48-piece orchestra, and Kubánka was able to produce numerous colorful and funky effects with the Robes.
Kubánka added that the silent operation of the Robe units was an important consideration for the live TV broadcast, particularly in the quieter moments, and he gave kudos to the fixtures’ brightness, flexibility and reliability.
Kubánka operated lighting for the show using a grandMA full size console, with video operator Thomas Lecký using another. Q-99 supplied lighting gear.
