Moving Lights for New Media Dance Presentation

SHANGHAI — Lighting designer Zhangyong of Art Beat Asia used Robe moving lights for a new media dance performance created by the Shanghai Theatre Academy called Civilization – Totem. Staged at the Shanghai Oriental Arts Centre, the performance combined dance, electronic music, video, sound and lighting, and won the Innovation Award for Science & Art at the 2008 Shanghai International Science & Art Exhibition. Lighting and sound were key elements of the production. The China Event Services & Supplies Co. (CHESS) supplied seven Robe ColorSpot 1200E AT and 21 ColorWash 1200E ATs for the event.  The ColorSpots were used to highlight and illuminate the individual actors, while the ColorWash fixtures created general atmosphere and ambience across the stage and performance areas.

“The fixtures all ran like clockwork throughout the intense rehearsal and performance schedules, proving very quick to program allowing very complex and subtle effects to be created in the tight timescale,” said Liu Duanyan (Kevin), technical support engineer at CHESS.

“Robe’s color mixing is near perfect — you can select any color very quickly and in fact, I think it's the best of any moving head I’ve used to date,” said Zhangyong.
