Touch-Activated Dance Floor at Eyecandy Lounge

LAS VEGAS — The Eyecandy Sound Lounge at the Mandalay Bay Hotel & Casino has a touch-activated dance floor made of LED tiles using an array of 140 pressure sensors that track the dancers’ steps and generate interactive visuals under their feet. The 20-foot-by-14-foot dance floor was integrated by Canadian-based Réalisations.net using a Medialon Show and Media Control system, which uses a database of still images and videos for the underfoot visuals.

The walls and ceiling of the lounge are also active surfaces, and the lounge also features four “multi-touch tables” in the VIP area, which lets guests interact with the visuals, sound and lights, and communicate with each other. Guests can control a variety of visual and sound effects, or opt to switch to SpyMode, where they can control any of the bar’s 13 motorized and fixed cameras, zooming in on what’s happening at the bar, the dance floor or adjacent tables. A pushbutton also makes the booth rotate around the stationary tables, each of which house two PCs.

The lounge also features three sound stations adjacent to the dance floor, where guests can plug in their iPods and view their personal music libraries on the table’s interface. They can then send requests to the DJ, who can opt to integrate the guest’s playlist into the lounge’s repertoire for the evening. The stations can also be set up for special events to host an iPod battle, where guests can show off their mixing skills using the club’s sound system.

“For every project, we create content that is specific to the client's need, while exploring and tastefully deploying new technologies and methods,” said Louis-Pierre Morin, technical manager at Réalisations.net. For Eyecandy, one of the main challenges was the “custom hardware and software technologies development,” added Louis-Pierre Morin.

One Medialon Manager V4 PRO in a Show Control Machine has been integrated to control all the AV gear at the club.
