LAS VEGAS — Mountain Productions, Inc. announced the largest scaffold structure in its history at this year’s Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC) in Las Vegas, which was held at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway here from June 21-23. The main stage structure was constructed using over 670,000 pounds of scaffolding and structures and stood 85 feet tall. With an overall width of 480 feet (180 feet wider than a football field), all of the scaffolding used for the main stage would span over 50 miles if laid end to end.
More details from Mountain Productions (www.mountainproductions.com):
Mountain Productions’ lead engineer, Paul Serkosky, P.E., began working on the EDC Vegas project only 9 weeks prior to the show. “In my 19 years here, this is the largest scaffolding structure I have ever worked on, with the AutoCAD models containing over 49,000 scaffolding components”, Paul states. This includes the main stage blueprints as well as four 80 foot tall audience towers that Mountain Productions also engineered and built. Combined, the main stage and towers consisted of 1,026,000 pounds of scaffolding. This year’s EDC Vegas project was also the first time that Mountain Productions’ supervisors viewed the construction drawings exclusively on Apple iPads, saving over 10,000 square feet of traditional paper print copies. The main stage was designed to resist 90 mph wind speeds with all equipment installed, and was closely monitored with the help of WeatherOps forecasting. Once the scaffold wall was constructed, the production companies hung scenic flats, video screens, inflatables and the centerpiece of the stage – a 35 foot tall animatronic owl with a 76 foot wingspan.
