HOUSTON — With its show in Cincinnati instead of Houston this year, LD Systems wasn’t able to provide a backstage tour of the 2009 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo as they did in 2008. But the company was able to help the audience at Reliant Stadium get a better view of performers during concert events even if they were facing the other way.
There were four separate LED screen systems new to this year’s show, LD Systems said. Three of these surrounded the existing eight large screens used during both the rodeo and concert portions of the show. One system served as a backdrop on the stage for the concert performance.
All screens could display graphic and full motion video content, and the overhead systems gave the rodeo organizers with more informational display space in addition to the screens that were positioned center stage to the audience.
The video system included a total of 4,636 individual 15-by-eight-inch LED panels, giving this year’s audience an additional 4,120 square feet of new LED screen area and a total 7,704 square feet of LED area, which doesn’t include end zones or the new ribbon boards.
Each panel contained 128 “3 in 1” LEDs — or 384 individual LEDs, adding up to a grand total of 1,780,224 LEDs that lit up the rodeo and concert events at the venue. Six dedicated computer processors working with 16 bit color processing controlled the video.
Along with the larger-than-life visuals, the addition of three stage thrusts brought the performers closer to the audience. Each thrust ranged from 10 feet wide to 20 feet wide, and brought the total stage width from 42 feet across to 82 feet across.
