Sarah Lynn Jakubasz, Lighting Director for ABC’s Good Morning America and GMA3: What You Need to Know, died July 22 of complications related to a Glioblastoma. Good Morning America aired a remembrance of Jakubasz five days later, on what would have been her 43rd birthday. During the segment, the show’s hosts paid tribute to Jakubasz, who joined the show in 2018.
“She was so good at her job; she took it so seriously. She wanted to make sure that everything was done to the highest level of professionalism,” said George Stephanopoulos. “She always brought a smile, a laugh, and occasionally, if we were lucky, a jar of her homemade strawberry jam,” said Robin Roberts, adding that Jakubasz was “an avid cyclist—rode her bike here to the studio every day, rain or shine. She never met a dog she didn’t like. Most of all, Sarah loved her partner Andy [Fritsch], her mom [Pamela], her dad [Steven], two sisters and brother [Tracy, Melissa, and Thomas], and all her nieces and nephews.”
Born in Holyoke, MA, in 1980, Jakubasz graduated from South Hadley High School in 1998. She studied lighting design and received a B.A. in Theater from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in 2002 and launched a successful career as a lighting and video designer for theater, live events, and TV. Before joining Good Morning America, her Broadway credits as an Assistant and Associate Lighting and Video Designer included Pal Joey (2008), Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark (2011), Nice Work If You Can Get It (2012), and Rocky (2014).
A celebration of Jakubasz’ life will be held Oct. 7 at the Appel Room at Jazz at Lincoln Center from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. More information can be found at the link below:
