TAMPA, FL —Creative Technology used Barco’s LED products for the live broadcast of Super Bowl XLIII, with set elements visible during both the commentary desk and red carpet portions of the broadcast. On the commentary desk set, a curved display using Barco NX-4 modules could be viewed from different camera angles. To the right and left of the commentators, additional tiles were formed into vertical displays. For the red carpet area, where game day interviews were conducted, a large 3×5 tile NX-4 screen was part of the set, along with four additional columns made up of 20 NX-4 modules each. For the venue’s NFL Experience area, seen by those attending the event, Creative Technology also provided NX-4 tiles in a curved configuration.
Creative Technology chose Barco’s 4mm NX-4 modules for their compact, modular design, brightness and resolution. NX-4 tiles use black LED SMDs (Surface Mount Diodes), with a pixel pitch of 4mm, well suited for the bright lights of a broadcast set. The broadcast, in high definition, required optimum LED resolution, and the small modules allowed the curves and columns to be easily configured.
Curt Petty, Creative Technology’s director of business development, said the company “very pleased with the outcome. The NX4 tiles fit together seamlessly and images were so bright and crisp, it was almost impossible to tell that we were looking at LED displays.”
