LOS ANGELES — Originally scheduled to be held at the Crypto.com Arena (formerly known as Staples Center) in Los Angeles on January 31, 2022, the 64th Annual Grammy Awards ceremony has been postponed due to concerns about the Covid Omicron virus variant. At the time of the announcement, on Jan. 5, 2022, no new date had been announced. [Update: The ceremony will be held in Las Vegas on April 3.]
The Recording Academy and broadcast partner CBS issued this joint statement:
“After careful consideration and analysis with city and state officials, health and safety experts, the artist community and our many partners, the Recording Academy and CBS have postponed the 64th Annual Grammy Awards Show. The health and safety of those in our music community, the live audience, and the hundreds of people who work tirelessly to produce our show remains our top priority. Given the uncertainty surrounding the Omicron variant, holding the show on January 31st simply contains too many risks. We look forward to celebrating Music’s Biggest Night on a future date, which will be announced soon.”
The postponement announcement coincided with the news that the Sundance Film festival, which had been prepped as a hybrid event with online activities complementing in-person events at different locales in Utah, will proceed as an online-only event in 2022.
“The Festival will begin Thursday, January 20, 2022 as planned,” festival organizers noted, in a statement. “Our eleven days of online programming will proceed, with screening schedule adjustments to account for an online only schedule. Our seven satellite partners will host screenings for their local communities from January 28-30.”
