All eyes in the dynamic world of gospel music were focused on the Metro Nashville Municipal Auditorium recently for the 29th annual Stellar Awards. The oldest award in this vibrant musical genre, the Stellar ceremony was viewed by millions of gospel music devotees on the national Up television network.

Lighting the two-hour Stellar Award broadcast presented a special challenge for LD Mark Carver (Mark Carver Designs, Nashville) and programmer Susan Rose. “Our overall vision for the design was to define the space on stage, while meeting the technical demands for broadcast quality in a live awards show,” said Carver. “The Chauvet Legends were instrumental in helping us achieve this goal.”

Carver and Rose’s lighting rig included 24 Legend 230SR Beam fixtures from CHAUVET Professional.  They used 16 of the moving heads on eight truss towers positioned across the stage. The other eight fixtures served as upstage floor units.

“The critical function we had in mind for the Chauvet Legend 230SR Beams was to provide a nice hard edge so we could get a sharp graphic effect in haze for the camera shots,” said Carver.  “The end result was excellent. The Legends defined the space beautifully for the audience and the TV cameras.”

With a razor sharp 225° beam angle and an intense output of 96,000 lux at 15 meters, the Legend 230SR Beam provided the hard edge that Carver and Rose sought for their stage design.  The compact moving head, which is powered by a 230-watt Osram Sirius lamp and features 17 gobos along with 14 colors plus white, also provided the rich and vivid visuals demanded by an event as passionate as the Stellar Awards.

“Gospel Music is a very dramatic and exciting genre, and the overall lighting we used had to relay the emotion in the music,” said Rose. “The Chauvet Legends framed the event and helped us convey a lot of the emotion on stage.”

Bandit Lites And Mark Carver Light Stellar Awards

NASHVILLE – The world of Gospel music convened in Nashville under the illumination of Bandit Lites’ gear for the 29th Annual Stellar Awards, the premier Gospel event that recognizes and honors African American artists. Daytime Emmy Award-winner Sherri Shepherd and Ricky Smiley hosted the event at the Metro Nashville Municipal Auditorium on January 18.

With the awards being broadcasted to millions on the UP Network, lighting designer Mark Carver created a look for the show that would translate well both on television and for the live audience, in addition to relaying the emotion of the performing artists.

“Gospel Music has a very emotional and spiritual quality,” Carver explained. “The lighting needs to try to help convey this emotion and engage both artist and audience.”

In order to accomplish such a seamless, expressive design, Carver turned to Bandit who provided equipment such as VL 3000 spots, VL 3500 washes, Clay Paky Sharpys, Robe Pointes, GRN Moving Washes, ETC Source 4s, Chauvet Legend Beams, GLP Impressions, GLP Volkslich, VL 3500 Spots, Mac Auras and Bandit 5x5s.

“Thanks to Programmers- Susan Rose and Carter Fulghum, LD/Gaffer Jeff Gregson,  Project Manager, Don Lockridge, and techs Adam McIntosh and Andy French, this show was well planned and well executed,” said Carver.

The awards will be broadcasted across the country on local affiliates and on UPtv on March 1. Check www.thestellarawards.com for local listings.
