GDTF was designed to be the entertainment industry’s open-standard format paired with MVR, which is an open-file format that provides a complete 3D model with data describing the different fixtures’ locations and GDTF files for the lighting fixtures used in a design.

GDTF was originally conceived and jointly developed by MA Lighting, Vectorworks, and Robe Lighting. There are a range of manufacturers supporting GDTF. The file format was developed to be an open standards technology to facilitate interoperability and data exchange between manufacturers and their designer base.
