The Burry Fredrik Foundation Announces Scenic Designer Omid Akbari as the Recipient of the 2024 Burry Fredrik Design Fellowship

The Burry Fredrik Foundation has announced Scenic Designer Omid Akbari as the recipient of the 2024 Burry Fredrik Design Fellowship and its $10,000 award. The Burry Fredrik Design Fellowship was established in 2017 to help launch the careers of graduates from David Geffen School of Drama’s Design program. Each year, the faculty selects one graduating scenic, costume, lighting, projection, or sound designer as the Burry Fredrik Design Fellow, who receives a cash award. Robe Footsies Crack it at Orlando Ballet

As the cornerstone of its 50th Anniversary Season, the Orlando Ballet commissioned a spectacular new production of The Nutcracker, one of the world’s most popular and most performed ballets, which debuted last December. Billed as “bigger, brighter, and full of surprises” as well as the largest ballet ever created by an Orlando-based performing arts organization, the production was staged in Steinmetz Hall at the Dr. Phillips Center for Performing Arts. New choreography, all new sets, costumes, and an updated storyline by Jorden Morris, who also serves as the ballet’s artistic director, brought an exciting edge to a timeless classic, combined with a host of interesting and innovative staging elements including a lighting design by Joseph R. ETC is officially accepting applications for the 2024 Fred Foster Student Mentorship Program. Selected students will be introduced to established industry professionals through a series of lively online events. Ultimately, each student will be paired with at least one mentor who will help guide their transition into the working world. ETC will accept applications to the 2024 program through April 12, 2024. The Stage Managers’ Association Foundation Adds Two Board Members

The Board of Directors of the Stage Managers’ Association Foundation (SMAF) is pleased to announce that at their January 2024 meeting, J. Jason Daunter of Anaheim, CA, and Judy Martel of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, were elected to the Board. Daunter and Martel will join the 10 current board members of this New York State-based charitable organization. Its mission is to promote the craft and the art of those working in stage management. Theatre Communications Group Announces THRIVE! Indigenous Theatre Grants

Theatre Communications Group (TCG), the national organization for theatre announces the recipients of the THRIVE! Indigenous Theatre Grants. The four Indigenous theatres that will receive $10,000 each are American Indian Artists Inc. (AMERINDA), Natives of the Apocalypse, Red Eagle Soaring, and Spiderwoman Theater. The THRIVE! Uplifting Theatres of Color program is supported by the Doris Duke Foundation and the Sheri and Les Biller Family Foundation, and developed and administered by TCG with an Advisory Circle of BIPOC theatre leaders. In addition to the Advisory Circle, seven arts and culture leaders from Native/Indigenous communities worked with TCG as advisors and nominators for the Indigenous Theatre Grants. Two theater lighting designers, Paule Constable and Tim Lutkin, have both become early adopters of GLP’s new impression X5 platform—believing the powerful fixture to be a perfect solution for theatre designers, and setting the standard as a new generation for wash lights.
