On the Friday night of LDI, live event industry professionals crammed into the Rio Hotel and Casino's main ballroom for the 10th Annual Parnelli Awards. The highlights were many, including the presence of Paul Anka, Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn, who came to honor and present Parnellis to people who were important to their career.
Every year, the "lumenati" (the enlightened members of the lighting industry) come to the Big Trade Show (the BTS), hungering for a taste of the latest technology, thirsting for a long drink from the well of new products, and they go home with aching heads and sore feet. Next year, we all promise, we'll all sing the praises of the BTS, but this year we've had our fill. Then we all beat a hasty retreat to the comfort of our stacks of virtual paper and our grand To-Do lists.
Sitting in the public gallery of the Los Angeles Superior Court, it is easy to see why the trial scene has been the trump card of dramatists for centuries. From the ancient Greeks to The Merchant of Venice to Twelve Angry Men to A Few Good Men, a good trial scene is hard to beat, and Los Angeles has seen some of the best.
It's hot. No, not just hot, it's scalding. It's baking. It's miserably, intensely, enormously, horribly, hot! It's Dallas in August. The mercury has hit 110 and it's still climbing. On the Superpages.com Center's outdoor stage for the Rockstar Mayhem Festival, Jason Bullock, LD for Nine Inch Nails, Slayer, and now Korn (among others) is searching for somewhere that's dark and cool to hang out before the show.
Writer and photographer Steve Jennings took the Mayhem Festival photos that appear in PLSN, Nov. 2010, pages 22-23. He also gathered these perspectives from those involved behind the scenes. -ed.
For over two decades, the annual Lighting Dimensions International trade show has been our window into the world of live event production. And this year, there was a big elephant staring back through that window. The elephant in the room, of course, was LED technology.
Twenty-five years ago, faxes were becoming popular, but there were no websites, very limited e-mail, no industry-wide tradeshows and moving lights were in their infancy. Today, of course, the world is a much flatter and smaller place.
Words can't describe it. Photos don't really do it justice. Even videos posted on Youtube after every one of their concerts can't quite capture the immersive laser experience at a Ghostland Observatory concert.
The Projection Studio's Ross Ashton and sound artist Karen Monid recently collaborated on a son et lumière titled Rose. The 40-meter-high projection lit up York's Gothic cathedral and its large rose stained glass window, serving as a centerpiece for the 2010 Illuminating York festival of light.
XL Events supplied LED screens and camera systems to Pope Benedict XVI's recent state visit to England and Scotland, including video support at three of the four major sites where the Pope made formal appearances.
Since moving to Las Vegas a little over two years ago, I've had the opportunity to work on a wide variety of projects including corporate industrials, conventions, private casino parties, televised broadcasts and concerts.
