Lighting can't be prevented, but severe weather protocols should be followed to minimize risks.

When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors: Lightning Safety Planning

Lightning kills thousands of people across the globe every year.  Lightning also arrives with an audible alert system (thunder). Thunder is an immediate warning of dangerous conditions outside. If thunder is heard, anyone outside is in danger of being struck by lightning. It does not have to be raining for lightning to occur. In fact, many lightning fatalities occur when rain is not falling. Other threats, such as damaging winds, large hail, flash flooding, or even a tornado, also may be present. When lightning threatens, immediate action needs to occur to promote life safety. A good Lightning Safety Plan specifies the actions that will be taken.

The United Way is a national system of volunteers, charities and contributors who help people in their communities. In the metropolitan area of Dallas/Fort Worth they have now done this for 90 years. To celebrate that milestone and gather funds for a worthy cause, they threw a gala party at the biggest room in town, the AT&T Stadium, home of the NFL’s Cowboys.

Bon Jovi’s “Because We Can” World Tour

At first glance, the design for the Bon Jovi Because We Can World Tour looks extremely simple. When the show opens, there is no video screen, just a wide-open stage and not a lot of lights. On the surface, it seems that Performance Environment Designer Doug “Spike” Brant has taken a severely minimalistic design approach. Nothing could be further from the truth; rather the environment reveals itself, literally at the cue of the video. Building on their dynamic visuals for the last few Bon Jovi tours, Performance Environment Design Group (PEDG) and Brant have taken advantage of a convergence of new technologies and a few innovative companies to realize their most ambitious design to date.

LD Mike Baldassari Lights “Rock of Ages” Concert Scenes

Set in the summer of 1987, the New Line Cinema film, Rock of Ages brings us back to the future with a long playlist of that era’s music from acts that include Journey, Def Leppard, Night Ranger, Bon Jovi, Joan Jett, Foreigner, REO Speedwagon, Pat Benatar, Twisted Sister, Poison, Whitesnake, and others. The movie adaptation of the popular Broadway musical, directed by Adam Shankman and starring Tom Cruise as the fictional rock star Stacee Jaxx, faithfully tries to replicate the late 80’s in every detail and that includes getting that old school rock lighting just right with hard backlight, high contrast, and saturated colors.
