DESIGN: “They’re not used to a ‘design’ — this is their first in years.”
DATES: Feb.-Oct., 2017. “A weekend-warrior schedule.”
THE DESIGN: “As we do festivals, fairs and clubs, the design needs to stay flexible, so I look carefully at fixture types, placement and purpose.”
TOUR DATES: February-November
THE DESIGN: “The Avett Brothers never play the same set or the same song the same way. Every night is different. They feed off the vibe of the crowd; if the crowd wants a more chill show or a rocker, then that’s the direction. Cue stacks don’t fit with their way of playing. Everything is on the fly all the time. I design a rig that morphs into different animals; lighting one guy playing an acoustic guitar or a heavy rocker with all seven band members. Overall, I try to accent the music, push the emotion further, but subtly so that people may not notice that the whole stage just ‘warmed up,’ but they feel it with their hearts.”
DATES: Throughout 2017
THE DESIGN: “I always have Andrea in full light. The audience wants to see him. Because he is blind, we mark off an area around his microphone with sticks taped on the stage, so he can feel it under his shoes. This allows him to know where he is and in the light.
THE DESIGN: “Heart’s Ann and Nancy Wilson are relatively hands-off in terms of day-to-day design. My mentor, LD Dale Doucette has been running this show for a decade, so his style and rapport with the band are well established. We are cautious about strobes and haze; my job is to provide the biggest looking show I can with contrast and movement carrying the visual interest— no matter the rig. We carried gear on the summer “Rock Hall Three for All” tour with Cheap Trick and Joan Jett; for this autumn leg we’re using house and local rigs. This has taught me how to build a show efficiently. In three days I may have three different consoles and rigs, so keeping a consistent feel makes each show feel like a Heart show.”

THE DESIGN: “Vance Joy is a dynamic pop act, but it’s also a very intimate one. At either end of the dynamic spectrum, his music lends itself to a warm blanket of incandescence. The next step was choosing instruments to provide punch and textures to accentuate larger moments without overriding the intimate, storyteller vibe intrinsic in the show. I’m also a drummer, and I’ve found my most valuable lighting tool to be timing. I look at it as playing drums with colors.”
