PLSN Show Report - 2016 Prolight + Sound in Frankfurt, Germany

Prolight + Sound 2016 Show Report

The 2016 Prolight + Sound and Musikmesse exhibitions in Frankfurt, Germany swapped physical locations this year, and instead of being held concurrently, the show dates were staggered, with Prolight + Sound running April 5-8 and Musikmesse held April 7-10. It’s part of the organizer’s re-launch of Musikmesse from a trade fair to more of a consumer music event and festival. Not everyone was happy with the changes, of course, but that didn’t hurt the overall stats for Prolight + Sound — which enjoyed an increase in total exhibitors (from 920 to 940) and a 16 percent increase in the exhibition display area. And as ever, there were plenty of technological advances on show.

Nashville Vendor Profiles: Growth-Minding Companies Converge on Music City

Here’s the factoid that sums up Nashville nicely: When we started putting this special section together in November, Nashville ranked 20th on the list of fastest growing cities. Today, in February, as we go to print with this special feature, it rates fifth. Any one calling Nashville home there will not be surprised by this meteoric rise, pointing to the good (opportunity) and the bad (occasional L.A.-like traffic snarls). And who is living there? Why, production companies and live event personal, of course.

Nashville Cats: LDs in Music City

In 1966, The Lovin’ Spoonful released their third album. On it was a track called “Nashville Cats,” a tune penned by John Sebastian. The song, written after a stop on their tour in Nashville, pays homage to the musicians in Music City. A local 19-year-old musician named Danny Gatton had opened for the band and pretty much blew Sebastian’s mind and his band off the stage. Fifty years later, the lyrics might well apply to the wealth of talented lighting designers based in the city today. On the pages that follow, PLSN profiles six lighting designers at the top of their form who hail from Nashville. Innovative and fully in command of the art of craft, they all knew early on, what their path would be. From country superstars to heavy metal legends, they can light it all. Please meet the 21st century’s new Nashville Cats.

PLSN 2015 LDI Show Report

Show Report: LDI 2015

It was another bountiful year in Las Vegas as the LDI (Live Design International) show hit the Convention Center for the fourth consecutive year. Over 10,000 people were on the floor to check out more than 350 different exhibitor booths over the three-day span the floor was open. From Lighting to Lasers, Staging to Scenery, it was all here on display last Oct 23-25. One didn’t have to search far for all the cool little gizmos we all need to keep the shows running. New inventions as well as improved versions of old standards peaked my technical interest as much as the great new lighting products.

The steps rising up to the Philadelphia Museum of Art are familiar to generations of movie fans as the “Rocky Steps,” due to their inclusion in what might be the most feel-good scene in the ultimate underdog flick, 1976’s Rocky, starring Sylvester Stallone.
