Using LED Tape as a Light Source

Chances are, you are not going to be seeing LED tape being used as a substitute for keylighting fixtures for staged events anytime soon. LED tape is mostly known for its use as eye candy that adds dimension to set pieces and its ability to be mapped to video. But when it comes to using the product as an actual light source — to illuminate something — gaffers have found that it can help them keep faces lit for film and TV products. In the PLSN “Lighting for the Camera” feature (April 2018, page 69), Richard Olson and Joel Svendsen profile how Christopher Lew, a cinematographer based in Toronto, and Jay P. Morgan have used LED tape from Rosco within tight spaces — the interior of a Mini Cooper — and really tight spaces — the interior of a space helmet — to keep the actors’ faces lit.
