If a picture is worth a thousand words, how many pictures is a 3D-printed mini-fixture worth? Hard to say, but one thing Ronn Campbell knows for sure is that his miniature lighting rigs with 3D-printed lighting fixtures has been helping his students get the hang of stage lighting more effectively than working with 2D pictures and text alone. “I ended up building a library of all the gear we owned at the school and printing it out in 1/2″ scale,” says Campbell, who teaches at Columbia Basin College in Pasco, WA. “It was a steady practice and as I started building my inventory I realized that I could teach more and more practical lessons on loading in, rigging, circuiting and so much more.” Along with mini-CM motors and straight, arched and circular truss, some of Campbell’s miniature fixtures light up with the help of a battery.
