The first thing one should consider in lighting a scene is the character of light itself. Light can be “hard” or “soft” — or fall somewhere in between. Hard light casts strong, well-defined shadows. With the softest of soft light, there is has no shadow. Hard light is typically generated from small-lensed sources, whereas soft light comes from large ones.
