Drones are Taking Off in Show Production

Drones have been seen (and heard) on rock tours at least since AC/DC’s concerts back in the mid-1970s, when Angus Young and Bon Scott conducted their guitar-vs.-bagpipe duels onstage. But the flying variety (rather than the musical pipe) is really taking off in 2016. Muse’s Drones world tour puts the mesmerizing devices front and center, with 13 HFOs. For Infiniti’s new car reveal at the Los Angeles Auto Show, LD Chris Medvitz had a stack of white boxes creating a wall between the spectators and the new car. When the event started, each light box, stacked like a brick in a wall, flew up and away to gradually reveal the car. The boxes were made of a lightweight fiberglass material over aluminum frames, and each contained a flying drone outfitted with lights. A crew of 30 people handled the 18 drones custom built by Aerial Mob.
