Lighting designer and director Dean Spurlock, who has been with Brad Paisley since the early 2000s, was called upon once again to support the Southern Rock/country music crossover artist’s latest Virtual Reality tour.

“As Brad’s designer, it’s always a challenge with the next tour,” Spurlock says. “It’s always fun coming up with new ideas to keep the show fresh.  We adding some [Vari*Lite] VLX3s on some custom pods from Tyler truss with a laser mounted in the center, giving us some cool stuff and filling those black holes upstage left and right. The five 20W RGB lasers are from Peachtree Laser. The operator, “LFJ,” does an amazing job. We also added a bobinette curtain downstage to project the laser graphics onto.  It’s cool seeing lasers and the video behind it.”

As for the video component, “Moo TV is running all video content this year,” Spurlock says, noting that Paisley is also contributing to the show’s visuals. “Some of the best parts of the show are the animations created by Brad himself.”

Along with a few compliments for Vari-Lite’s VLX, Spurlock credited Accurate Staging and Atlanta Rigging as being “great to work with — some of the best work I have ever seen. As for my company, Spurlock Lighting, we are starting small and have been growing every year.  I have a very talented crew that I can always count on to make it happen!”
