Designer Insights by Steve Jennings:
Mason Ford
Lighting Designer & Director
Lighting designer & director Mason Ford first started working with Swedish singer Tove Lo a little over a year ago on her first U.S. headline tour in October 2015. For her current tour in support of the album, Lady Wood, Ford credits Moment Factory and production designer Jesse Stout for helping to forge the artist’s visual design aesthetic.
“I was brought onto her team by her tour manager, Brian O’Dowd, having worked with him and musician Mayer Hawthorne for some time prior to starting with Tove. It’s been an interesting process watching her production develop over the last few months.
“The design was primarily the brainchild of Moment Factory. It went through a few different iterations before we settled on a plot that we all felt really comfortable with. Since we’re playing clubs and theaters, it’s been pretty interesting adjusting for the different rooms, some of which are dramatically different. The rig itself was designed to be fairly adaptable, and we’re definitely going to get as much use out of it as possible over the course of this album cycle.
“As far as the actual fixtures are concerned, I couldn’t be more pleased with the products we chose. The Mythos have proven to be extremely reliable, bright and versatile. They have been and continue to be my first choice in hybrid spot/beam fixtures. The Impressions, X4 and X4S have also proven to be reliable and fill the role in the shows looks.
“Working with VER, our primary vendor for this run has been awesome, they’ve been very helpful and responsive throughout an admittedly turbulent pre-production, and easy to reach on tour. They’ve worked with us with everything we’ve asked of them and I couldn’t be happier with their service.
“Moment Factory was essential in every step of the conception of our production for this tour. Without their unique edge, the show certainly wouldn’t have the essence of individuality that it currently has now.
“Working with Jesse (Stout), our production designer has been a pleasure and has helped to completely alter Tove’s live aesthetic for the better. I look forward to continuing a working relationship with all of them on future Tove endeavors.”
