Designer Insights, by Steve Jennings:

Justin Collie (Lighting Designer):

“The band had some specific requests that we discussed before submitting the design proposal but the trust was already established having designed their last tour so they did not limit us creatively. The production and venue restraints had more impact on the design than anything else.  We weren’t given a lot of lead time and the prep occurred over the holiday period so we were actually still making adjustments while in the programming phase. Kille (Knobel) and I have a great relationship so the work is very collaborative, but if you had to break it out, my duties revolved more around the set and video elements, but we both sat in dark rooms for long days to put it all together.

I really enjoyed the end result of the process. The set we designed was (to me at least) a very nice use of multiple ‘old school’ theatre techniques combined to create something quite unusual, particularly as far as rock shows go. And I have to mention Jason Baeri who programmed the grandMa 2 for us. He is supremely talented and was a great asset for us.”

Kille Knobel (Lighting Designer & Director):

“Justin and I collaborated on all the production concepts but I am not a production designer, I have plenty of ideas about scenic and media elements, but at the end of the day, lights are my thing.  One of the most energizing parts of our working relationship is this ongoing process of selling ideas to each other.  Could be as simple as what color a cue should be to whether or not we should have moving motors in the design.  I think that constant vetting of ideas to one another makes the end result stronger and the fun factor super high.  I wish I could lay claim to the mastery in programming that went into this show, it is all Jason Baeri’s console wizardry.  Jason is as even keel as you can get and beyond talented.

“I got my start on the Icon Console, then the Virtuoso and now the 676; so non tracking consoles.  I learned the Whole Hog and GrandMA over the years out of necessity but those consoles have not typically been my first choices.  I used the GrandMA1 for the last Soundgarden tour and for all it’s undeniable power and fabulousness it had a fair amount that made me grumpy.  A lot of my complaints were dealt with on the MA2 and I was excited about some of the new features and actual physical console layout of the MA2.  It has definitely been the right choice for this tour, it’s immensely feature rich and user definably driven which I love.
