Tour Notes:
Mudcrutch originally formed in 1970 in Gainesville, FL with Tom Petty, Tom Leadon, Randall Marsh and Mike Campbell. Benmont Tench joined in 1972. A few years later, three of them became Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. The original band lineup reunited with a tour in support of their new album, Mudcrutch 2. LD Stanley Green has worked on Petty’s tours for years and is the LD out on this tour. It’s been close to 40 years since Petty has played the old songs, but he’s sticking to them and the new numbers wrapped around a few cover tunes in the set.
Designer Insights by Steve Jennings
Stanley Green, LD/Lighting Director:
“Because the band decided to play all clubs and small theaters, there is very little room on stage for any kind of large floor package. So having 4 pipe and base towers for fixtures worked out very well. For space onstage as well as fitting in the zero feet of truck space. I chose in my floor package the Mac Aura’s, Ayrton Magic Panels, Ayrton Magic Blades along with the Colorforce 48’s. Weight and power were really my main concern. Four guys need to tip it up fully loaded. And I was trying not to have to use a distro as well. Mac Auras are a great all around basic fixture that I used as the work horse lighting the band. Honestly I’ve been wanting to try the Magic Blade out for the Heartbreakers, so I put a couple on this. They worked out well as low side light on Tom. I love Colorforce, this was the first time Tom has been lit with foot lights as far as I know. I wanted something more beefy to use like truss spots. Magic Panel were the perfect choice.
“One of the first things Tom told me was “I’m always lit from above, feel free to use whatever angles you want”. This was a great opportunity to do just that. I’ve always loved to use low side lighting, you can get such great moody looks. I was actually pretty worried about it at first as Tom sometimes needs to read the teleprompter given that it’s all Mudcrutch songs, some thirty years old, some off the new album along with a few covers. But everything worked out great. I just had to be very careful about focus. Now I’m looking forward to the next Heartbreakers tour.”
