Designer Insights

Peter Morse
Lighting Designer

“The Move Live On Tour, though a bit larger than last year’s version, was still structured within a comparatively limited budget and show-to-show schedule. With only two trucks on tour, space was at a premium, as was the actual daily load-in schedules. Given this, the short list of lighting gear and actual positioning of the rig had to be carefully thought out in order to provide thorough coverage on stage and overall lighting looks that supported the contemporary choreography and music, while still taking up as little cartage space as possible.

“What made the task easier was the superb quality of the dance and the overall level of entertainment provided by Derek and Julianne Hough, and their amazing group of dancers. The need for lighting effects was at a minimum. As long as we covered the spectacular choreography, the drama was there!  Due to limited truck space and budget, traditional lighting positions for dance were not always available. So a unique lighting hang was created to maximize coverage and contribute to the visual drama of the dance. This was truly a “family” of cast and crew with lots of fun in a small touring package. We merely had to illuminate the event, not create one!”
