» Designer Insights by Steve Jennings
Lighting designer and director Bryan Hartley is out using some local production for the current Megadeth tour, but Hartley had enough gear from Gemini Lighting/Sound/Video in Dallas already to have a consistent show everywhere he went, regardless of the local production.
“We have a large set designed by Jordan Coppersmith which looks incredible and is perfect for this band. I needed to light the set from the inside to give it a glow and also had lights mounted near the bottom of the set for silhouettes of the band. These lights are the Philips Nitro strobes that works as an LED wash as well. They’re very powerful lights. We also carry an Elation EPT61p 6 mil video wall with those same panels also embedded in the set.
“When it comes to my lighting console and gear, I starting making investments in the gear I use for these shows years ago. There are many advantages to owning your own gear… I have Hog 4’s, Catalyst Media Servers, Folsom-image Pros and a lot of black soft goods.
“For the video I run during the performance, we’ve got an intense time-coded show. Timecode runs the catalyst media servers and Hog 4 console. The video content is done by Charlie Terrell and Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine …Amazing stuff ! And so precise with the music !
“It’s great to still be involved with Megadeth as I have a long history with them dating back to the 80’s and 90’s. They have a great new record out Dystopia, and a full year of touring ahead ! Dennis Waite is our production manager who does a fine job at getting this show in and out of some difficult places. The crew is great, including Michael McGee, our tour manager.”
