Designer Insights by Steve Jennings

We caught singer, rapper and songwriter Lizzo on the closing night of her tour, the second of her two sold out shows in San Francisco. Having gained tremendous success in the last year, with Time magazine naming her an artist to watch — the singer’s third album Cuz I Love You, with singles “Juice” and “Tempo,” the album reached the Top 5 of the Billboard 200 list. We got a quick chat with lighting director Danielle Edwards about the tour, who spoke of the lighting design by Drew Gnagey of Earlybird Visuals.

“I absolutely love Drew, he’s such a fun person to be around. I actually inherited the gig from him so it was nice to have him working with the show again. Lighting programmer Meg Dougherty was also great to work with, I enjoyed watching the way she programmed… sitting with her in her creative process. We only had about 5 days of true rehearsals, where Meg and I worked closely together through a few nights with the rough draft of the setlist. Things were changing by the hour but we all rolled with the punches and I’m pleased with the outcome!

“Meg programmed all of the original 15 or so songs. Then there were a few songs added or given new arrangements within the first week of the tour, where I started with a blank slate. Then there were a handful of additions that I integrated into the show, mostly adding effects or changing songs to different colors, just a little boost here and there to add to the dynamic.

“Lizzo’s show is full of energy and this crew is an amazing group of people to work with, and they match that energy in their day to day roles. For as big of an artist as she is right now, we’re a small crew and we all work well together to make the show happen. As well as having an awesome team, we’ve had some great vendors who have made things that could have been difficult, much easier.”
