Designer Insights
Alain Corthout (Lighting Designer):
Alain Corhout has designed the lighting for numerous tours, some of which include Miguel Bosé, Juan Luis Guerra, Netsky, Goose and Tiesto. He is currently preparing a new tour for Alejandro Fernandez. PLSN caught his Juanes designed tour currently traveling across the United States.
“This is my 2nd tour working with Juanes after the P.A.R.C.E. 2011 Tour. For this tour, Juanes wanted something theatrical, organic, and he didn’t want to drag a big production around. Drapery plus the winches made it low cost and with some projectors and few lights you can create many different and dramatic looks. We had lots of fun with the tests in Denmark at Wahlberg to see how far we could stretch the drapes before they ripped apart or the winch cables would snap. The setup is a bit unconventional, which makes it more interesting. I programmed the show on the Chamsys MagicQ lighting console, it’s very user friendly, light, solid and small. As for the lighting director, Jan Ceuppens has worked with me before as well as with the Chamsys console so he was my first choice to have him operate the tour.”
Jan Ceuppens (Lighting Director):
“I’ve known lighting designer Alain Courthout since 1999. At that time as an LX tech and Vari*Lite tech. In the past decade we have done several productions together going from TV shows to festivals to rock concerts to fashion shows… The Chamsys console existed for quiet a while when we start using it in 2008. Over the years we build close relation with the people from Chamsys in Southampton UK. Especially with Chris Kennedy who is responsible for the software design. Both of us are Chamsys beta testers and use this desk on every show we do. It’s a stable desk with a lot of features for a small price. The support we get is from the Belgian distributor AVL and from Chris Kennedy making it very user friendly.
“I have been working with both designers, Alain and Ignace D’Haese for a long time and they have always been a big inspiration for my own projects which are from a much smaller scale than there’s but it’s nice to work with such creative people. I see Alain a little bit as my mentor since I have learned a lot from him programming wise. Working with Visions Lighting and lighting crew chief Rafael Avila Manzo in general makes life pleasant and more relaxing. The fact that we are doing just theaters and sometimes very small clubs makes us adjust the set every day and tickles our creativity more then ever. Production wise this has been a big adventure for me since this is a mainly Spanish-speaking crew, production and band. I have been on tour with Alejandro Sanz in 2001 as a tech so I had a little knowledge of Spanish but it was way to long ago but nevertheless it is a great experience and I had the chance to see many different ways of working which makes it very interesting for me.”
