Mikey Cummings

Lighting Designer/Director, Pulse Lighting

Mikey Cummings has been working with Pulse Lighting since early 2013. Based in Raleigh, NC and owned by Paul Hoffman, Pulse Lighting is a full service lighting production company.

“It’s been a great experience and full of excellent opportunities working at Pulse Lighting. Paul motivates us all to push the creative envelope, allowing us to provide unique custom designs for our clients.  When Kenny (Gribbon) and I started this project, it was our desire to visually interpret the upbeat spirit of Colbie’s music as much as possible. We decided on a curved-riser, set faced with video to prevent the rigid look that the standard squared off risers create. Kenny and I decided to use the Robe Pointes because they are just simply one of the most reliable and versatile products on the market. It’s ability to meet our needs for a beam, profile, and wash fixture, all in one was astonishing. We were also very pleased with Clay Paky’s A.leda B-EYE K-20, it has exceptional control abilities. We made the cubes out of 30 Elation CuePix Panels and used them as a key feature of the lighting rig.”

The Elation cubes were designed to be a key accent of the set and lighting.

“I am an advocate of using existing products to create new lighting and scenic elements in unexpected ways.  I had seen the panels used plenty of different ways two dimensionally but never in a three dimensional application. So, I sat down with them in Capture Polar and in no time I had the cubes in front of me. I knew that Kenny would have almost limitless abilities when programming them, and I was extremely pleased with everything he did with them. Once designed, Paul had them fabricated for the tour by Steelfab who did an incredible job.

“Colbie and her entire team are always a pleasure to work with. Colbie’s tour manager Ryan Bishop is always very open and supportive of our ideas, and he contributed a great deal to the creative process. I had a great time working on this project with Kenny; hopefully, we will get to work on several more together in the future.”
