Designer Insights
Bud Horowitz
Lighting Designer
Bud Horowitz has worked with numerous artists over the years, including recent tours for Yanni, and also for the Brian Setzer Orchestra, as both designer and director.
“For the Brian Setzer Orchestra tour, although I’ve used Vari-Lites many times in the past, the first time that I used them exclusively was on Carrie Underwood’s 2010 Play On tour. Since then, I spec them on all of Yanni’s international and U.S. tours, as well as Brian Setzer’s. On Brian’s tour, I only have 15 moving lights. Every fixture needs to serve a variety of functions in the show, as well as perform every night. The Vari-Lites certainly do that for me. I am especially fond of the VL3500 Wash; it’s an amazing light.
“Brian is not a big fan of seeing a lot of movement or changes during a song. His musicianship, along with his band, really speaks for itself. It’s more about coming up with a killer look for each song. Not necessarily a ‘big’ look, but one that is perfectly appropriate to the song. The show is a lot of fun — for the band, the crew and the audience. The snow drop is certainly the one that gets a lot of attention.
“I have know the core Delicate Productions guys (the lighting vendor) since Delicate was first founded. They are always a pleasure to work with, and have been the lighting vendor for all our U.S. Yanni tours as well. They provide a very high level of service, while remaining one of the few ‘family’ run vendors. Silas Flores handles all the lighting account needs for Delicate.
“There are only nine of us on the crew, so we are pretty much a family out there. Most of us have been involved with Brian’s shows for quite a while. I have one lighting tech with me, Adam Walden. Adam has done the last two Setzer Christmas tours with me and is part of the family.
“What can I say, Brian’s show is a blast. There are no attitudes amongst the artist, band or crew. There are also no sound checks or rehearsals. On the last Christmas tour, I had to leave for two weeks to cover some Yanni shows in Florida. I had a friend of mine, Mike Duncan, come out to cover Brian’s show for me. Mike said that his two weeks out there made him remember why he enjoyed being on the road with an act. We work hard, with a demanding schedule, but are surrounded by great people and great music!”
