Particulates are always in the air. They are so tiny we don’t even notice them. But it is these little specs of dust that make beams of light visible. In the world of staged beam effects, foggers and hazers also play a key role. They help to define shafts of light and provide effects. Germany-based Look Solutions has recently introduced the entertainment world to what has to be one of the smallest foggers I have ever seen. The Tiny FX Fogger is a compact, battery-operated fogger that easy fits in the palm of your hand. At first glance, the Tiny FX seems as though it was designed to be used primarily as a novelty item. I couldn’t have been more wrong.
Packing a Punch
For a fogger that measures in at just two inches in height and width and four inches in length, this tiny packs a punch. Then body of the Tiny FX houses the heating coil, exchanger, electronics and a 250 ml syringe-like container for the fog fluid. The battery pack for the Tiny FX is a separate item that connects to the machine via a 2-foot-long cable. The 11.1 volt battery pack is about the same size as the generator itself.
For remote control, Look Solutions offers a wireless remote that allows you to operate the Tiny FX up to 100 yards away. Also available is a timer that lets users program run time and pause times. If the limited battery life is a potential downside, an optional 120V power supply is available.
At full charge and with a filled fluid reservoir, the Tiny FX is able to continuously produce fog for 10 minutes, with about 2-3ml of fluid consumption per minute. Don’t let the 2-3ml consumption rate discourage you, however. After pressing the on button, within 30 seconds I had already filled up a 10-by-10-foot room with fog.
Although it was not specifically designed to do so, the Tiny FX fogger is able to produce a massive amount of fog, quickly filling a room. The design, form factor, limited battery life and fluid reservoir of the fogger enable it to be used as a special effect that is remote and easily hidden.
There are a number of situations were the Tiny FX fogger can find a placed on stage. Guitarists can create the illusion that their guitars are on fire simply by concealing the Tiny FX. They can then trigger the unit themselves, or it can be fired remotely via DMX. Another possibility that comes to mind is theatrical entrances, such as that for the Genie in Aladdin. The Tiny FX fogger may be tiny, but the creative possibilities are endless.
