DTS Synergy 5 Profile

Share this Post:

Italian luminaire manufacturer DTS has released an incredible new LED moving head profile that quite frankly grabbed my attention; not only does it have a full feature set, but there are some innovations that have shown DTS as a real contender in the American market.

‡‡         The Light Source

First and foremost, Synergy 5 profile has a 420W white LED engine at 7000K with a 16,500 lumen output and a very flat field — 49,600 lux in the 4.6 degree zoom at five meters, and 1,483 lux in the 43 degree zoom at five meters. What is a remarkable feat in technology is that the fixture focuses on the top quality of light emission. They provide the user with a DMX selectable variation in CRI; you can choose at any time to have a CRI of greater than 90 (good for television and theatre for natural skin tone), or a CRI of greater than 75, which is good for that punch in larger format design work — large venue impact, concert production, and anything that you need a fixture providing a lot of punch per lumen.

The patented Hi-Q Dimming technology, that only DTS uses in its products, guarantees a perfect linearity in the dimming of brightness of multi-chip white LED sources — even at low dimming levels — without “steps” between adjacent values, offering completely flicker-free operation for camera use. Included in the fixture is the “softener filter.” This eliminates the shadows typically created by the latest-generation multi-chip LEDs, giving a perfectly homogeneous projection. The electronic dimming also controls the strobe functions, which can reach a speed of 33 flashes per second. Overall, the maximum power consumption for the unit is 600W.

The Synergy 5 Profile features a 9:1 zoom with a range from 4.6 degrees to 43 degrees, all with auto focusing. This means your projected image will be sharp throughout the range of the zoom, great for myriad amounts of image and gobo work. Sticking with the field features of the Synergy 5, the luminaire offers a lightning-fast yet smooth 4-blade, indexing, rotating framing system with shutters that rotate 30 degrees in each direction (60 degrees total travel) and a full 45-degree rotation on the entire framing bulkhead itself for a total travel of 90 degrees. Each of the four shutters operates on its own discrete physical plane. Synergy 5’s framing system offers zero to 100 percent insertion into the beam for a true “curtain” effect (think of a single blade wiping open the entire light beam), and easy generation of three and four-sided polygons with smooth travel and indexing. The luminaire offers a linear frost filter for taking the edge off of the beam and any images of framing shutter cuts.

‡‡         Mixing Up the Light Beam

This profile features a patent-pending dynamic animated effect system that DTS calls “Dynamove.” This effect creates some pretty stellar three-dimensional visual effects on multiple layers. Users can choose among several macros for pre-built effects using Dynamove or, of course, program their own. Tied to the Dynamove system is a newly engineered virtual animation wheel system that creates some beautiful overlays and replaces the classic animation wheel. DTS’ selection of animations includes Water, Clouds, Fire and Flame. I am unsure how they do this unique feature, but this alone makes the fixture stand out more than any other hard edged LED sourced fixture I have tested in some time.

No hard-edged moving profile would be complete without breakups, and the Synergy 5 offers the user several options. First is a rotating/indexable six-slot gobo wheel. The gobos maintain the ability to remain sharp in focus as the user adjusts the zoom. Prism-wise, the light offers both a circular 24-facet rotating prism as well as a linear six-facet rotating prism.

The color system for Synergy 5 is both wheel- and mixing-based, with linear CMY mixing, linear CTO and a six-color color wheel capable of emitting split colors. There is a separate DMX channel that holds macros for mixing popular gel colors. This Gel emulation is made from mixing the linear CTO with the CMY filters to match what designers are used to seeing when calling out specific gel numbers to programmers.

The efficient dissipation system of the fixture guarantees a constant silent operation.
Under normal operation conditions at full power (16,500 lumens output), the measured noise level is only 37 dBA at one meter (with fans set on Silent mode). You can switch directly from Silent mode to Standard via DMX, as needed.

The interface for the Synergy 5 is industry-standard plus, with Art-Net 4, streaming ACN and RDM all included and ready out of the case. The luminaire has both 3-pin and 5-pin inputs and outputs, an RJ-45 port for signal and PowerCON True1 connections for power. Synergy 5 also features a battery-powered interface for configurations in the case without the need to power up the unit to prep for production. The fixture makes use of 44 DMX channels and quick tri-phase pan and tilt stepper motors. It also features one of the best pan and tilt locking systems in the industry.

I highly recommend giving the Synergy 5 Profile a test drive sometime in the very near future. DTS is a brand that has been around for a long time and produces some outstanding luminaires for the various genres of design in which we find ourselves immersed.
