So in the previous blog written I spoke about Les Claypool’s show here in Arizona. Les impresses me every time when I see his shows. Seeing the show brought to mind the following subject matter: House LDs vs. Touring LDs. I go to shows not only to enjoy the artist on stage, but the production itself. Isn't it hard for an LD to go to a show and not be critical? I am always watching and saying either "wow," "strobe," or "I'd do this." With having heard "wow" from me means I'll eventually shut the hell up because I am visually satisfied (usually coming from touring LDs). "Strobe" means that I really was looking for a strobe at a raging part of the song and it's not being used, or something at least visually dynamic. "I'd do this" refers my own ideas that I’d imagine in my mind for that part of the song and it didn’t happen. Pretty I would just see a recycled movement and/or gobo being used at a national venue. I will say I've seen some really cool things out of some club LDs who know their system inside and light anyone on their rig. Although in this instance I literally saw the same circle effect and gobos throughout the show and when that happens I can't enjoy the production anymore and redirect my attention back to the stage. Luckily enough Les is a tremendous entertainer! So with that being said and being both a house and touring LD. You have to write some more cues and if you get bored of them do an update with other colors, movement patterns, gobos, etc. Always try and keep a fresh show so you don't get bored. When I work as a house LD and I knew a national act was coming to town that week I'd get online and check out some of their tunes and write a few cues to bring in during the load-in/sound check window and program them in. If you're not doing that it’s fine, but don’t underestimate us little people out there who are hungry with big ideas and want to learn more instead of sitting on our ass and pressing the same six cues for a whole show. Just pick up the manual once in awhile and try to read up on some subject you feel you're weak. Oh and be sure to use your imagination! That’s the beauty of our work everyone! We get to use our ideas to make a living so please don’t let them go to waste =) Well enough rambling for this week. Next time we’re going to talk about dance moves. I mean OUR dance moves at the console…What's yours? I roll with the head bobbin' hips left to right.
