Clay Paky Alpha Spot QWO 800

Like most manufacturers, Clay Paky is responsive to what lighting designers are asking for in the way of new technologies and fixtures, and the design for the company’s recent addition to its Alpha series of fixtures, the Alpha Spot QWO 800, is no exception — it was designed in response to what LDs are saying they want and need.

The fixture incorporates one of Philips’ latest FastFit single-ended MSR Platinum lamps. Clay Paky noted that this 800W light source can compete for brightness with some older 1200W lamps. And along with the new technology in the light source, the Alpha Spot QWO 800 is equipped with optical features that make the fixture versatile and flexible.

Not “Status QWO”

The QWO, moreover, has nothing “status quo” about it. It stands for Quite Wide Optics, and it promises a zoom range from 7.6° to 55°?with a uniform beam distribution at all zoom angles. A new “Stay-Sharp-Zoom” feature is also designed to enable users to lock images in focus while zooming.

Add to that the lamp’s ability to reproduce highly detailed images, and the Alpha Spot QWO 800 promises to serve as a very effective graphics projector.

With all of the detailed features mentioned above, Clay Paky didn’t leave out common must-have features and effects such as two glass gobo wheels, one which rotates; an animation wheel; a rotating prism; and a number of color options including a full CMY system, a color wheel and a variable CTO system.

Hard and Soft Edge

A graphic representation of the fixture’s Stay-Sharp-Zoom opticsThe beam’s size can be altered using the 16-blade iris. It’s designed to deliver a more rounded, continuous hard edge. For soft-edged projections, there is a variable frost. An  electrical-mechanical hybrid dimmer, meanwhile, promises enhanced dimming accuracy.

Making the most of these features is the Dyna-Cue-Creator, a tool designed to not only speed up programming, but automatically synchronize effects in a manner that would be very complex and difficult to achieve, if done manually.

The Alpha Spot QWO 800 has two other vital features. First, it is one of the quietest automated fixtures. It never exceeds 42dBa and runs even more quietly while operating at half power (400W). Its second advantage is its small, compact size — no bigger than an Alpha 700.

Usually, fixtures with such a rich set of features are housed in large, bulky frames. Not the Alpha 800s, however — they have a slim, compact build that gives them greater speed and agility.

Small, lightweight construction, zoom range, excellent brightness, uniform beam, silent operation, low consumption — these are just some of the features that make the Alpha Spot QWO 800 an excellent tool for TV, theatre, corporate events, and other demanding lighting applications.
