The Proteus Brutus™ from Elation Professional is an extremely bright, IP65 rated LED Wash/FX fixture that offers 75,000 Lumens of high intensity output in any environment. With its high output, 10:1 zoom range, and wide range of colors and effects, the Proteus Brutus is ideal for outdoor concerts, festival stages, special events, and with its fully sealed IP65 rating dust and waterproof design, it’s an excellent fixture for theme parks and cruise ships or any application where the weather and environment could take its toll on an unprotected product.
Elation has been developing IP65 rated products for over seven years now and has been ahead of the curve in developing products that can be used indoors or out, and in a wide variety of weather and environmental conditions. The Proteus Brutus joins the other Elation IP65 rated luminaires—like the Proteus Maximus™ LED Profile and the Proteus Excalibur™ Beam for a trio of compatible, high-power luminaires. The trio share the same color systems, so they can be mixed and matched in a designer’s rig with confidence that they will play well together. IP65 rated luminaires also make end-users, as well as rental and production houses, lives easier as they don’t have to bag—and unbag—the lights if they’re used outdoors in potentially poor weather conditions.
What Does IP65 Mean?
The IP, or Ingress Protection rating, rates the degree of protection provided against intrusion by tools, hands and fingers, dust, accidental contact, and water with mechanical casings and electrical enclosures. The first digit of the two-digit rating (e.g., IP65) represents solid particle protection on a 0-6 scale (dust and objects) and the second digit is for liquid ingress protection and it’s on a 0-8 scale. In both scales, zero equals no protection and the highest number equals 100% protection. So, for the IP65 rated Proteus Brutus, the first digit—6 means that the light is totally protected against dust/intrusion. The second digit—5 means the Brutus is protected against low pressure jets of water from all directions, limited ingress permitted. Great for use in the rain, but you can’t submerge it in water.
Output, Optics, and Color
The Proteus Brutus can output 75,000 Lumens from its custom-designed 1,200W peak-field White LED engine. With a native color temperature of 6,500K, the custom peak-field engine with 2-to-1 center to edge ratio gives powerful, high center intensity beam and wash throws while allowing for more unique air FX. With its large 8.7” (220 mm) front lens, paired with an 10:1 zoom, the Brutus allows users to go from a tight 4.5° spot to a wide 45˚ wash of light and effects over great distances. The Brutus’ Beam Angle ranges from 4.4° to 39.4°; and its Field Angle range is 6.8° to 49.7°. In terms of pan and tilt, the Pan range is 540°/630° and the Tilt range is 266°.
The Proteus Brutus offers a wide range of color combinations, employing a full spectrum CMY color mixing system along with a variable CTO color correction option. In addition, it has a fixed six-position color wheel for added color customization, including UV and high CRI options.
Framing, Gobo, and FX Systems
An optional 4-blade, full blackout framing module with +/-45° indexing allows for beam shaping and accurate light control at any angle. The entire framing module is rotatable, allowing the beam to be shaped and angled as required for accurate highlighting. The flexible framing system can also be used to create projection or mid-air effects.
Proteus Brutus includes a comprehensive FX system with six total—five rotating / indexing (interchangeable) beam shaping and FX gobos. These are metal gobos with an outer diameter of 34 mm and an image area of 24 mm. There’s also a sixth rotating multi-color glass gobo that’s also 34 mm in diameter and 2.2 mm thick. A 360° bi-directional animation wheel can be engaged for graphic FX along with a variable frost filter that can be used for softer gobo or wash effects. A high-speed iris with variable pulse effects and high-speed electronic shutter and strobe can be engaged for further effects. The unit dims smoothly all the way to zero with included variable 16-bit selectable dimming curve modes. The LED refresh rate is controllable via DMX.
Control
Control options for the Brutus include DMX, RDM, Art-Net, and support for sACN. It has four DMX Channel modes Standard (25) / Extended (36) / Framing Standard (34) / Framing Extended (56). The full-color LCD touch control panel, which can flip 180°, comes with six buttons for fixture addressing. Dimming curves include four, 16-Bit selectable curves: Linear, Square, InverseSquare, and S-Curve. The light has a power-saving Hibernation Mode to reduce wear on the fixture and its components. This hibernation mode disables motors and most electronics. Data connections for the unit include 5 pin XLR DMX In/Out and IP65 rated RJ45 Ethernet In/Out. An IP65 rated locking connector is included for input power. The power input is 200-240V AC 50/60Hz with a maximum power consumption of 1,700W.
Designed for a variety of venues, including noise critical environments like theaters and TV studios, the Proteus Brutus offers various fan operation modes which reduce noise. Fan Modes can be changed remotely via a DMX control channel, allowing the fixture to offer high output or whisper-silent operation at a moment’s notice. The loudest the unit gets is 59 dbA at 1m with the LED at 100%; the quietest mode, Low Noise — Mute results in 32 dbA at 1m with the LED off. Fan modes include Auto (default, High, Low, Low Noise — Studio, and Low Noise — Mute.
To protect the fixture from harmful sunlight, which can damage a fixture’s internal components from extended exposure, the unit incorporates an automatic Sun Protection Mode. Using an internal sensor to determine its physical orientation, then reorients the fixture towards the ground to prevent sunlight from entering the lens.
The Proteus Brutus measures 25.3” L x 18.0” W x 34.2” H (643.6 mm x 456.9 mm x 869 mm) and weighs 104.1 lbs. (47.2 kg). Approvals and Ratings include CE | cETLus | IP65 | UKCA. The Proteus Brutus luminaire ships in a cardboard box with a custom fitted polyurethane foam FIL (Foam In Lay) insert. This foam insert would easily fit into a custom sized flight case, which is an option and not included.
