The Chemical Brothers: Live Again ft. Halo Maud

UK electronic music group, The Chemical Brothers, embraced virtual production technology in the music video for their single, “Live Again.” Shot at ARRI’s Virtual Production Stage in London, Lux Machina worked alongside partners ARRI and Creative Technology, leading the camera tracking team and operating the servers used in the production.

Helmed by directing duo Dom&Nic, the video follows a dancer emerging from a trailer into several different environments, filmed as one continuous shot. Harnessing the power of Unreal Engine’s Virtual Production toolset, Arri, CT, and LuxMC provided the production with virtual control of the environments, ensuring a smooth transition between each setting with the use of a single camera shot. This method eliminated the need to travel to different locations or even move to another sound stage, allowing for an incredibly quick turnaround. Equipped with state-of-the-art camera tracking and designed as a practically 360-degree LED Stage, ARRI’s Virtual Production studio is well equipped to handle a VP shoot like this. Delivering edgeless ICVFX shots, flawless reflections, and larger-than-life content that actors can respond to in real-time, stages like this can greatly reduce the need for post-production VFX.

“This is an idea that could not really have been achieved with traditional filmmaking techniques,” the directors said. “We created virtual CGI worlds and used long unbroken camera takes, without edits, moving between those different worlds seamlessly with our hero character.”

For Lux Machina, the project is a testament to the power of collaboration and innovation, setting a new standard for the music industry.
