A major focal point for the 4,590-square-foot China National Pavilion at the 2015 Milan Expo in Italy this year will be a dream-like field of LED-infused artistry titled The Field of Hope, the Spring of Life. More than 140 countries are participating in the exhibition, which is expecting to draw close to 20 million visits from people around the world for a six-month span starting May 1 and ending Oct. 31, 2015.
The China National Pavilion is tying in with the Expo’s overall theme, Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life, with a vision of agricultural traditions and innovations that can combine to harmoniously supply healthy, safe food for everyone while respecting the earth.
After looking at other options, The China National Pavilion organizers turned to CreateLED, which has been involved in more than 2,500 projects in the U.S. and Europe in little more than a decade, for an assist with the project’s creative and technological demands.
Since it was founded in 2004, CreateLED’s LED display solutions have supported events ranging from Milan Fashion Week and the Paris Auto Show, and along with more than 200 employees, the company provides regional services from Italy, German, Sweden and the Netherlands along with North and South America and the Asia Pacific markets
Asked to come up with an LED display that would give pavilion visitors what looked like an actual field of wheat, CreateLED opted against merely providing a flat screen approach. Instead, the company worked on creating a field of very thin LED strips sticking out of the ground. With the aid of a customized control system, the strands of video will resemble a wind-rippled field of grain. The CreateLED R&D team devised new technology just for this event with an LED strip they named the “Rye Device.”
The “field” seen by visitors will be comprised of thousands of these Rye Devices, each representing a single strand of “wheat.” Keeping all these thin strands standing upright could have been a huge obstacle. CreateLED solved this by designing a large PCB board on the floor of the building. Then through the use of adapters and trunking fixed on the Rye Devices, they were able to solve that.
The individual strands in the “field” vary in height, and the placement of the individual LEDs on the strands is also staggered, for a “fuller” look. The strips are also designed so they can slide on the circuit board once on site, and each Rye Device can have their pixels moved in three dimensions, adding to the pixel mapping possibilities.
As they stroll through the pavilion, the viewing public’s interest will be piqued by more than just a field of wheat, with imagery representing animals foraging through the field at times and, at others, different color schemes reflecting seasons and times of day. The width of the viewing angles on each LED pixel on the Rye Devices was chosen with audience viewing angles in mind.
CreateLED works with global partners to create, develop and deliver LED visual solutions for multiple indoor and outdoor applications, from AV control and command centers to screens used for advertising displays, media and entertainment events, sports screens and more around the world. Along with standard LED displays, the company is known for its front-serviceable AirLED series and AirMAG video walls.
Beyond the Field of Hope pavilion, CreateLED is customizing six of its AirULTRA-5 outdoor ultra high definition LED screens for the exterior walls of the United Nation’s KIP Pavilion at the Milan World Expo. These six screens will greatly advocate for thousands of enterprises to enhance the quality and popularity of the UN KIP Pavilion.
