As I write this, Genesis is playing their very last concert. Coming up in the business as a lighting person, one of the first things I do when I walk into a venue or theater is to look up, checking out the lighting rig. Being a Genesis fan, their music often makes me think back on their role in the launch of Vari-Lite and the birth of the moving light industry that we know today. Throughout my career I have enjoyed covering the innovative technology that so many inventive people have envisioned and realized. And some happy accidents, like that prototype light that didn’t turn off as planned when moving, or the wrong color mix that resulted in Rosco’s Bastard Amber, an industry staple of colored lighting gel ever since that first ‘bad’ batch. This month again there is exciting new technology, something for every market segment in fact, to discover in the pages of PLSN.
