Katori Hall’s play, The Mountaintop, opened on Broadway at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre on Oct 13, 2011 and ran until Jan 22, 2012. Here David Gallo explains how the details went into his design for the play’s setting of Room 306 at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee on April 3, 1968.

Katori Hall’s play, The Mountaintop reimagines the events on the night before Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s assassination in Memphis, following the delivery of his memorable “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” speech. The Broadway production starred Samuel L. Jackson and Angela Bassett. It was directed by Kenny Leon with Assistant Director Kamilah Forbes.
