Behind every concert and television show we go to, behind every spectacular effect on the stage at the theatre, behind every clever lighting of urban architecture or public space, there is always a whole load of sophisticated technology. However, not all shows are equally exciting. What makes the difference is the lighting designer, an artist who uses light as a creative tool to interpret the rhythm of music or the atmosphere of a theatrical performance. Patrick Woodroffe is one of the world’s most celebrated lighting designers. He has been artistically illuminating the most famous artists and stars of the entertainment world on concert stages, and in theatres and television studios for many years.
In Lighting The Stars, a workshop organized by Claypaky and Audiosales, Claypaky’s distributor for Italy, Woodroffe, one of the world’s most celebrated lighting designers told the attendees about his most significant and exciting experiences. Woodroffe, who has designed the lighting for the Rolling Stones, AC/DC, the London Olympic Games, and a host of other internationally important events, included an emotional tribute to Michael Jackson, with whom he was working on preparing a tour just days before Jackson’s untimely death.
After that, in an original live hands-on exercise, Woodroffe put together a lighting design for the song “I Wanna be Your Slave” by Måneskin, revealing some of the secrets of his art and technique. The workshop, with AILD as sponsor, was held on Tuesday May 16 at the Teatro Sociale in Bergamo, in the beautiful old city canter. Bergamo and Brescia are “capitals of culture” for the year 2023.
