Bob Moody, the Met’s head scenic artist, talks about the hand-painted show curtain for Terence Blanchard’s opera, Champion. Chosen by set designer Allen Moyer, the image depicts a moment from Emile Griffith’s fateful bout with Benny Paret.

Champion is an opera by Terence Blanchard with a libretto by Michael Cristofer. It is commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera. Originally commissioned by Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, co-commissioned by Jazz St. Louis. This production is a co-production of the Metropolitan Opera and Lyric Opera of Chicago.
